Exerzierstraße is inconspicuously located in the district Wedding and Gesundbrunnen right in the subway triangle Osloer Straße, Nauener Platz and Pankstraße and if you just reached it, it’s almost at its ending. This part of the district Wedding is a quieter one. While in direction West, only around 1 kilometer away, vibrant Leopoldplatz can be found and in opposite direction the train station Gesundbrunnen with the Gesundbrunnen center and other lively streets are located.
But let’s stay for a second at the quarter all around Exerzierstraße. Only 5 minutes away the small river Panke crosses the district at which shores cafés and alternative restaurants attract many people in summer months as one almost forgets of living in a metropolis. The language potpourri instantly takes you back into Berlin and Wedding. Spanish, Arabic, English, Danish, German and many others: Uncountable nations meet and characterize the street scape of the casual and lively Wedding, a former working district.
The special character of the district can be seen at the close-by Uferhallen. At the end of the 19th century the wide open area was used as depot for the horse-drawn railway and it was still used by the Berlin transport companies in the present tense. Since 10 years though, Uferstudios, an established studio for contemporary dance, rose up to an international recommended institution in the remarkable listed clinker building. As if that were not enough, numerous artists, start-ups, gastronomy and unusual event locations settled while spreading a special character to the district. A special highlight is the piano salon Christophori that not only has more than 100 historcial pianos, but which space is also used to renovate and it invites regularly to chamber music evenings with international artists in an informal atmosphere – although times of this being a secret are long gone.
If you expand the radius all along Badstraße direction Gesundbrunnen, you’ll be able to dive into the colorful and culinary variety of the so called little orient of Berlin with its cafés and shops. At the end of Badstraße one can easily spot the new-designed train station with international connections and diverse S-train connections and surely not to miss the Gesundbrunnen center, which rises like a bow of a ship into the city scape.
In need of some relaxation after a shopping tour or the daily hustle? If you cross the street, you reached the wide open people park Humboldthain with rose gardens and an observation tower, where you can either relax or spend some nice hours in the open air swimming pool Humboldthain. The starting point of the highly demanded ‘Berliner Unterwelten’ tours mostly starts from Gesundbrunnen.
Wedding – ranging from vivid to quietness – all around Exerzierstraße you surely find everything you need while living in the city center.
